Contemporary Art Events

Tuscany stands out on the map of Italy as a sort of “magnet” that attracts Italian and international contemporary artists. They not only participate in individual and group exhibitions in the region, but often conduct specific research and create artworks in dialogue with the ancient tradition.

This original and intriguing “tradition of the new,” which characterises contemporary art in Tuscany, in the small towns as well as in the cities, is mainly due to the inescapable relationship of the artists with the landscape and anthropological characteristics of this extraordinary territory.
The purpose of this section of the portal is to provide access to information on contemporary art events and related archival materials, in order to map and identify contemporary art culture in the region between 1980 and 2020. The time span covered is from the end of the great season of experimentalism in the 1970s, which saw a kaleidoscopic proliferation of initiatives by artists and innovative galleries, up to the establishment and development of the current Tuscan contemporary art system, supported by a flourishing private gallery market and active public institutions devoted to the promotion and enhancement of contemporary art.
The portal maps solo and group exhibitions, performances, site-specific interventions, shows, film reviews and public debates connected with contemporary art. A shortlist of selected events is illustrated by detailed explanatory texts and related archival materials (postcards, press releases, brochures, photographs of installations, invitations, posters, etc.).
